Toddlers are pure, unpredictable magic. If you’ve ever tried to get a two year old to stand still and smile on command, you know it’s virtually impossible. However, that usually doesn't lead to the best photos anyway!
A few days ago, I met up with a lovely mom and her sweet toddler for a "Mommy & Me" session along the Feather River in Yuba City. Like many toddlers at the start of a photo session, he was a little hesitant and a bit fussy when we first began. New faces, a big camera, and high expectations can feel overwhelming for a little guy!
Instead of forcing poses or trying to get him to sit still, we let him take the lead. We turned the session into a playdate grounded in simple exploration. We encouraged him to look at the rocks, inspect the leaves, and guide his mom wherever his curiosity led. The moment his eyes landed on the river, everything clicked. He fell in love with the moving current!
Watching his eyes light up as he explored the water's edge, walked around in the sand, and held his mom’s hand while navigating the sandy shore was so precious. Mom was so wonderfully relaxed, leaning right into his playful energy, chasing after him, and holding him close when he needed a quiet cuddle.
By stepping back and letting him explore naturally, we captured the sweetest, most genuine moments: real smiles, curious glances, and that unbreakable bond between a mother and her child.
To all the parents out there worried about how their toddler will behave during a photo session, take a deep breath. You don't need a perfectly still child to get breathtaking photos! Sometimes, all it takes is a little freedom, a beautiful spot like the Feather River, and permission to just let them play.
